Situation

Climate change poses a major threat to human health worldwide, driven by interrelated phenomena including severe weather events, wildfires, air pollution, rising antimicrobial resistance, and the spread of infectious diseases.

Challenge

Healthcare systems must prepare for these compounding climate-health risks while also transitioning to more sustainable models of care delivery. Raising political profile and coordinating action across governments and healthcare systems at a Pan-European level.

Action

Commission membership contribution

Supporting an independent WHO/Europe advisory body convened to raise the political profile, awareness, and support for stronger action on the health impacts of climate change.

Framework development

Contribution to a proposed framework addressing interconnected health risks, policy and governance gaps, and strategies for accelerated climate-health action.

Result

The independent Commission in May 2026 delivered recommendations to the WHO, governments and healthcare leaders to treat climate change as a growing threat to health security, transform health systems, scale up local action, and reform the economic and financial systems that are driving the climate crisis.
